    A TV receiving antenna is a crucial component of wireless television signal reception and serves as the gateway for radio waves to enter the TV system.     Main Classifications of TV Antennas

    TV Antennas can be categorized based on different criteria, primarily including the following:
    1. By Structure: Divided into wire antennas (made of wires or metal rods) and aperture antennas (made of metal or dielectric surfaces, such as parabolic antennas).

    2. By Purpose: Includes TV Antennas, communication antennas, broadcast antennas, radar antennas, etc.

    3. By Frequency Band: Mainly divided into VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) antennas. Full-band antennas can simultaneously receive both VHF and UHF TV programs.

    4. By Polarization: Divided into circularly polarized antennas (where the electric field vector rotates in a circle over time) and linearly polarized antennas (such as horizontal and vertical polarization).

    5. By Active/Passive Status: Divided into passive and active antennas. Active antennas incorporate amplifiers to achieve high gain and high signal-to-noise ratio reception.

    Working Principle

    The working principle of a TV antenna is based on electromagnetism and physics. TV stations modulate video and audio signals onto high-frequency carrier waves, which are then radiated into space via transmitting antennas. When these high-frequency electromagnetic waves reach the receiving antenna, they induce alternating currents in the antenna's conductors.
    From a physical mechanism perspective, a wire antenna can be viewed as an evolution of a parallel-wire transmission line. When the two wires are opened up, the currents at corresponding points on the two arms flow in the same direction, reinforcing the electromagnetic fields at various points in space to form effective radiation or reception. When the length of each arm is one-quarter of the signal's wavelength (λ/4), it forms a basic half-wave dipole antenna.

    Modern TV Signal Reception (DTMB)

    Currently, China has implemented the Digital Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcast (DTMB) system. This is a public welfare digital TV service that requires no subscription fees; users can receive central and local satellite TV channels for free using an antenna.
    Equipment for receiving DTMB signals mainly includes a compatible TV (or a set-top box) and a receiving antenna. TVs with built-in DTMB functionality use internal tuners, demodulators, and decoders to process the RF signals received by the antenna, ultimately restoring the audio and video signals.

    The Science and Safety Hazards of "Watching TV with an Iron Wire"

    Recently, claims that "you can watch TV for free by just plugging in an iron wire" have circulated online. While technically feasible, this practice poses significant safety hazards.
    Technical Principle: China's DTMB system transmits signals via VHF and UHF radio waves. When a metal conductor close to a quarter-wavelength of the signal (such as an iron wire) is inserted into the TV's DTMB port, it acts as a makeshift antenna, generating an induced current in the electromagnetic field to receive the signal.
